Tetris Didn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

As any major prize-giving event draws close, one notices a demand for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for board games, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial above others. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier game development, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
